Going Solar Chapter 1: Know your Sun

This is the very fundamental step before even thinking of installing a solar PV system. Without knowing the sun, how you going to harvest its energy ?

First of all, the sun is the star in the center of the solar system. It is 330,000 times the mass of Earth, and account for 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. It is consists mainly of hydrogen (73%) and helium (25%).

Its photosphere (outer shell of a star which light is radiated) is burning hot with plasma of temperature between 4,500 and 6,000 K (4,230 and 5,730 °C). The central mass of the sun is even hotter with 1.57×107 K as nuclear fusion happens in the core.

A basic anatomy of the sun.

In fact it is a huge nuclear fusion generator in the center of the solar system that emits huge amount of radiation and photons in all direction from the sun. Furthermore it constantly producing solar wind of supersonic speed (250-750 km/s) from its corona (upper atmosphere of the sun), which is a plasma consists of mostly electrons, protons and alpha particles with thermal energy between 1.5-10 keV. It cause a unique phenomena such as comets with tails always away from the sun and polar lights.

Earth, as a third planet from the sun, is the only planet in the solar system that is flourish with life. It is protected by Earth’s magnetosphere and thick Earth atmosphere.
